Subsea cleaning tool animation for Lateral

Lateral designs and builds subsea cleaning, inspection and repair tools from Klepp Stasjon, twenty minutes down the road from us. Their tools work in the places nobody can film — inside caissons and hawse tubes, along marine-growth-covered risers, hundreds of metres down, in water with the visibility of strong tea. We rebuilt the toolset in 3D so Lateral can show exactly how each one works, in clean light, from any angle.

The tools

  • FlexiClean — the compliant brush head that gives the range its name. Hydraulically driven straight off the ROV, it strips marine growth without marking paint, plastics or coatings.
  • FlexiTric — a clamshell frame that closes around a riser or umbilical and cleans it 360°, on diameters from 100 to 500 mm.
  • FlexiClean Axial — a square-section head that self-centres inside hawse tubes, caissons and water intakes, where a round brush cannot reach.
  • ProctoCam — the flexible-reach inspection camera that goes in after the cleaning is done.

Studio renders and a working scene

Each tool was modelled from Lateral’s engineering data and lit twice. Once as a clean studio render on white, for datasheets, spec pages and exhibition panels. Once in a working subsea scene — an ROV holding a FlexiClean against a growth-covered chain, with the particulate, the backscatter and the light falloff you actually get at depth. Same asset, two very different jobs.

Why render it instead of filming it

Offshore footage of a tool in use is expensive, rare, and usually too dark to read. A render puts the tool in perfect light, removes everything that isn’t the point, and can be updated the day the product changes — without booking a second vessel day.
